NYT: Congress Returns to Confront Jobs Bill

Congress returns from a blizzard-lengthened two-week break Monday, and the will Senate immediately face a crucial test vote on a stripped-down jobs measure.  Senator Harry Reid of Nevada, the majority leader, has been trying to round up a few Republican votes for his version of a jobs bill after he surprised the Senate and the White House by jettisoning many elements of a bipartisan proposal that had some momentum.

The top Republican in the Senate said Sunday that GOP lawmakers "may well" vote for a jobs bill, though it's not clear whether they will allow a Democratic measure to advance right away.  Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., prefers a costlier version drafted with GOP input and he didn't commit his support to advance the legislation on Monday to a final vote this coming week.

Friday was billed as a day to discuss the next long-term federal transportation legislation, but the day turned in to a stirring defense of the Obama administration's economic stimulus law and ended with a commitment from Senate environment committee chairman Barbara Boxer (D-CA) to do all she could to help turn Los Angeles into a transit town within the next 10 years.

Another piece of an Interstate 44 bridge in east Tulsa crumbled away Sunday, two days after a gaping 8-foot hole damaged cars and created traffic jams.
