Bond Buyer: Obama 'Principles’ Coming in 90 Days

The Obama administration will unveil its principles for a new multi-year transportation bill within the next 90 days, Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood told reporters yesterday at a conference here sponsored by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials. The Senate also will get cracking on its own multi-year bill, building on existing House legislation, Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., chairwoman of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, said during a hearing yesterday.

...James Weinstein, Executive Director of NJ Transit, noted that the transportation agency is already facing a $300 million budget deficit, a $33 million cut in State subsidies and a 4 percent decline in ridership. He had earlier announced an emergency hiring freeze, the elimination of 200 jobs, an executive pay cut of 5 percent and a 33 percent reduction in contributions to 401(k) plans. But even those measures would save only $30 million. Governor Chris Christie, in defending his subsidy reduction, has called NJ Transit "a political patronage mill," an assessment that a few commenters on this morning's article appear to share.

Crumbling city sidewalks and overflowing sewers in many Indianapolis neighborhoods are on the city's priority list, but that list is long and expensive, Mayor Greg Ballard said. Ballard and members of the city's Infrastructure Advisory Commission held a third public meeting Wednesday night at Cathedral High School.
The meeting, called a Request for Expression of Interest, deals with the city's billions in infrastructure needs.
