It's a happy Friday for transportation wonks: the White House has nominated Polly Trottenberg, executive director of Building America's Future, as assistant secretary for policy at the federal DOT. Trottenberg's ascension signals that the Obama administration will make transit a serious priority and encourage a more equitable consideration of urban priorities during debate on the upcoming federal transportation bill.

President Obama picked an infrastructure coalition leader with top Senate staff experience and a work history that includes major port areas to become the Department of Transportation’s assistant secretary for transportation policy. The president said he plans to nominate Polly Trottenberg to that post, from her current job as executive director of Building America's Future. That group is chaired by Democratic Gov. Edward Rendell of Pennsylvania, Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger of California, and independent New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

Polly Trottenberg has been nominated as assistant secretary for transportation policy at the Department of Transportation, the White House reported Thursday. Trottenberg serves as executive director of Building America's Future, a national bipartisan coalition that supports U.S. infrastructure investment and a more accountable, sustainable and performance-driven national transportation policy, according to the White House news release.
